Arts & Health
What is Arts & Health?
Art has always been part of human’s experience, from early caves paintings to Tracey Emin’s bed, it has provided a commentary on our life that helps us to communicate, share and process our experiences.
-
Arts & Health can include all forms of creativity including, but not limited to; performance, writing, visual or 3D art, spoken word, theatre- and sometimes it combines a few of these Trained facilitators work with individuals and groups to explore a creative process - sometimes this has a focus, such as exploring common themes or illnesses, and sometimes it is open and responsive to a groups needs and ideas.
-
Arts & Health promotes health through building holistic wellness, which can then help a patients physical recovery. Often the process of being in a ‘creative flow’ can bring the patient into the moment, leaving behind health anxieties and allowing their mind to start to recover. When our minds are rested, and not anxious, they can work on helping us heal our bodies.
The other benefits are working with or alongside other people, feeling a part of a community, and working towards something. Creativity helps us to build culture, and with culture we build communities that support and care for each other.
-
I trained in Fine Art, which allows me to take ideas and concepts through various creative mediums. My specialisms are drawing, painting with natural inks, clay and natural forms sculpture, printmaking, artist books and journalling, but I often work outside of this in response to ideas from participants. I love to help create nurturing projects that are planned and evaluated effectively in order to recognise the valuable impact they have on individuals lives.

A collaborative project between Art Shape and Rosetta Life, using movement, music and art to build connection for neurology patients.
-

A project that developed resources for people on ‘Virtual Wards’ (monitoring vitals outside of the hospital) to bring the healing benefits of nature and art into their homes.
-

Art Shape and Rosetta Life ‘Odysseys’ Project 2026
An inspiring project for Art Shape and Rosetta Life in Gloucester.
‘Odysseys’ brought together participants referred from the Neurology team in GRH. It includes people who have experienced a neurological event, a stroke or injury or as a result of a condition such as MS, some of whom are managing challenging day-to-day conditions such as epilepsy and diabetes.
Crossing boundaries of movement, storytelling, dance, song and visual arts, the group have worked with creative health artists to put together a performance that we are showcased on Thursday 7th May 2026.
As lead visual artist, I worked to devise movement scores using large scale drawing, used drawing with natural inks to prompt storytelling, and facilitated large scale mono-prints based on participant’s stories to be used in the final performance staging.
Drawing to Music, using different brushes and tools to make marks. Using the score produced to create movements for our performance.
Virtual Wards
A Creative Health project for Art Shape, commissioned by the NHS.
Virtual Wards developed online resources for people monitoring their health vitals after a hospital stay through machines called ‘Virtual Wards’. NHS staff became aware that there were high levels of stress and anxiety during this time in the patient experience and commissioned this research into accessible resources that could be used within patients homes.
As lead artist and nature connection facilitator, I produced a video-based workshop that combined Forest Therapy and Creative Flow techniques that could be undertaken at home, whilst still connecting the patient to the anxiety-reducing qualities of nature and art.
